Flattering Style Tips for a Rectangular Figure

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

Your shoulders are about the same width as your hips and your waist is undefined. Styles that add curves look best.Balancing this body style is achieved by emphasizing your shoulders and playing up your hips. Think curvy. Tops and jackets with strong or wide shoulders will make your waist look smaller by comparison. Shorter, fitted jackets, without shoulder pads, breaks up the mid section.
Wear the same color on top and bottom breaking it up with any other color belt in the middle creating the illusion of a waist. Any size belt, thick or thin, will pull the eye inward and define the waist. Pleated skirts that fan out from the waist will give the illusion of curvy hips. Seamed, untucked, peasant blouses work well.
Add volume to your bottom by wearing a tunic top that lands at your hips. Another way is to wear a drop waist top with detailing at the hips to put width where you need it (like a fabric band). Low rise pants and skinny jeans work well because of the narrow leg and will make the hips look wider.  An empire dress that hugs the bust will create an imaginary high waist. Sexy wrap dresses and flare skirts (paneled cut) adds curves. Bold jewelry draws the eyes upward and pointed toe shoes will lengthen legs.

Flattering Tips for Top Heavy Figures

If you have heavier breasts, narrower hips and slimmer legs, make the most of your womanly virtues by showing off your  legs and great cleavage.
It is extremely important to wear a correct fitting bra that doesn’t bulge on top or on the sides. You will look more in proportion. The natural bust line should fall somewhere between your shoulders and your elbow.
Tops worn too tight play up large breasts too much; too big tends to make you look larger. Fitted V or U-neck, boat neck, off the shoulder and collared shirt tops in a knit or woven with a little stretch, are the most flattering. Never wear horizontal stripes. Avoid full or puffy sleeves. Laced camisoles work well under a jacket or top. To create balance, choose an a-line skirt. Play up great legs with skirts an inch above the knee.
A flat front pant with a lower rise, just below the natural waist is flattering. Never wear pleated pants. Five pocket jeans  in a boot cut or a front pocket pant with a wider opening from the knee will help disguise tummy problems. Don’t wear pants with a narrow leg, it will only accentuate top heaviness. Dresses or tops with princess seams tend to make you look slimmer. Don’t cover up head to toe. Showing a little skin is more flattering.

No one looks good in pleated or high waist, pants with narrow ankle openings. Never buy or wear them. Don’t worry about being trendy. Just wear what suits your figure adding the color or accessory of the season to look up dated.Wear your skin color, not white panties, under a white pant or skirt. Resist covering up head to toe. Accentuate one part of you and flaunt it. Pastel colors tend to wash you out. Beige is colorless and only for layering. Avoid wearing anything too tight. If you can wear it to bed, don’t wear it out in public. Muffin tops (the bulge over the waistband) belongs solely on muffins.
Wear shape wear every time you get dressed. Make every day a special occasion.
