The Appearance of Sexy Knee High Boots

Monday, November 1st, 2010

One of the best things about the fall season is that you get to wear all your sexy boots from ankle boots to knee high and above the knee. Fabulous boots look stylish, keep you warm, and cover up any lower leg flaws. The only challenge is finding the perfect pair that flatter your legs.

For a romantic feminine look, wear them with a longer skirt and for a sexy sophisticated look, wear them with short skirts. Black knee high boots with a heel, can go from the office to an evening out. Flat knee high boots look great with leggings and will help balance your figure if your fullness in on top or in the midriff. Flats also look fabulous with casual or preppy skirts and jeans. If you are tucking them into your jeans, be sure they are skinny jeans to avoid the “ballooning” effect.
If your skirt is shorter, wear thicker pantyhose with Lycra, but never ultra sheer.

Knee high boots help make wider calves look slimmer. Stretch boots look and fit well once you master the “scrunching down the shaft” process of getting them on, like you would a stocking. Chunky heels also make the calf appear slimmer.

Women with skinny ankles need a boot with more structure or bulk like slouch boots. Opt for a thinner heel. A chunky heel makes the ankle even thinner looking. Keep looking till you find a pair that is not too big for your calf.

Stylish, comfortable boots are flattering as well as practical.

Find Upcoming Fall 2010 Styles Right in Your Own Closet

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Dear Tonia,
I know that fashion repeats itself every ten or twenty years. Over the years I have pretty much stayed the same size and bought good quality clothing. I kept my favorite pieces in hopes of using them again some day. I was wondering what will be in style for the fall and if I can dig out some of my old favorites and still be in style. I am in the business world and very fashion conscious but also on a tight budget right now and don’t like shopping in consignment stores.
Thanks, Beth- New York City

You Can Find Upcoming Fall 2010 Styles Right in Your Own Closet.
Dig out your old vests. This fall you can rest your jackets and layer with vests. Fur, menswear, velvet, sweater: whatever you like, are all good choices. Be sure they are in the correct length for your body or it will make you look boxy. If you are busty, opt for a longer length to elongate your torso, in a textured fabric without embellishment. You can let your shirts or tops hang past the vest but not past your back side, especially if your fullness is at the bottom. Remember to show off the quarter moons for the best look.

Longer skirts are back as well. Be sure they are the right length to flatter your legs. If the skirt is too long and you are petite, it will make you look shorter. Also, when it is too long and you have a very thin ankle, it will look like a chicken leg sticking out. If your ankle is thicker, it will look like a tree stump. Think curvy and use your calf as your guide.

Your skirt, dress, or capri, should hit mid calf or a little longer. The key is to show the difference between the wide part of your calf and the narrow part of your ankle and that will be the correct length for you. Compare the lengths and you will easily see the difference. Go shorter with a kitten heel (also in style) or a flat shoe or boot.

Ankle boots are back and look great with any length skirt or dress. Use with colored or textured hose.

Gray is the color for Fall 2010, everything from soft dove grays to bright silver. It mixes great with other neutrals like camel or black. If you can’t do the all-gray look, you can work it with color pops of yellow, pink, light blue, burgundy and purple as well. Worn in various textures and tones, together it looks stylish and very sophisticated. If gray doesn’t work for you then just use the color as an accessory in belts, shoes, or handbags.

Thin belts are in, wide ones are out. Use a skinny belt to cinch-in a chunky cable knit sweater  and define your waist.
Fur features heavily in everything from skirts to coats, hats and handbags and boots are no exception.

Avoid Touching Your Flip Flops

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

TODAY, with the help of the University of Miami emergency mobile flip-flop lab tested some footwear and found that there were more than 18,000 bacteria on just one pair of flip-flops. Even more shocking than the number of germs were the type represented — bacteria from fecal matter, skin and respiratory germs. One pair of 6-year-old flip-flops had germs that cause yeast infection and diaper rash. The New York Daily News recently tested two pairs of flip-flops as well, ones that traipsed through bars in New York’s West Village, plodded through Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, rode 2 and 3 subway trains, attended a Brooklyn Cyclones game in Coney Island and rode the Cyclone roller coaster. One pair wandered into the Coney Island subway station’s public restroom.

They found that the shoes that flopped their way into that public restroom harbored about 13,900 more bacteria than the other pair. Germs can be especially problematic if you have an open cut or blister on your foot, or if you handle your flip-flops a lot with your hands. (NBC’s Michelle Kosinski )

Avoid touching your flip-flops and your unwashed feet as much as possible. Consider reserving those flip-flops as part of your beach or poolside attire only.

What’s “In” for Spring 2010

Monday, April 5th, 2010

Denim is back in a big way in jackets, dresses, shirts, rompers, and shoes, mixed with neutrals, whites, and brights. Pair with wood or turquoise accessories.

Cage shoes (updated gladiator- casual or dress, flat, or high heel), wedges, and ankle boots (with leggings & shorter skirts) are really making a statement this Spring so be sure not to wear your pants too long and show them off.

Coral, soft oranges, or peach, depending on what works for your skin, paired with neutrals and whites, blues, and gold and silver metallic.

Army jackets, military looks, camp shirts, fitted (for a more feminine look) a trend that will work for many women. Khakis and olive green look fresh but if these are not colors that suit you, keep them at the bottom away from your face.

Shirt dresses in soft fabric or military styles looks great on the working girl in a knee length or shorter for any figure.

Bermudas, walking shorts, that hit around the knee.

New leggings in crazy prints and fresh fabrics as opposed to just plain black, provided you have thinner thighs. Acid wash, tie dye, khaki, zip ankle details, and don’t forget denim leggings.

Mixed & matched plaids can be formal or sporty depending on the print, fabric, and scale. Be careful as it usually doesn’t work so play it safe with a neutral top or pick out a color in the plaid as an accent.

Very wide legged pant suits, with short jackets or slim tops (not a good combo for bottom heavy figures).

Fringe and tassels on handbags add a western, hobo feel, especially when paired with denim,

General Rules for Making BIG FEET Look Smaller

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

People  who think they have big feet often ask me how to make their feet appear smaller. Usually my first response is that their feet are probably not as big as they perceive them to be. When something bothers us about the way we look, we tend to exaggerate it in our heads. Ask someone else who is not as critical and you’ll find they usually don’t agree. Never the less, being subjective, that’s what WE see.

Bear in mind that there is only 1/3 of an inch difference between whole sizes.
If you wear a size 11 shoe and you wish you wore a size 9, look at a ruler to actually see what 2/3′s looks like and you will find that it really doesn’t look like much of a difference. Remember your feet have to be in proportion to your body for them to carry you properly.

That being said, if you still think they are big here are a few good general rules you can easily apply.

First consider that some styles that make your feet look shorter can also make them look wider so for the sake of this blog, I will address length. If shoes look longer out of the box than others do, they will look the same on your feet.

High heels, (as  many of you know are my favorite), make your feet look smaller. For those who can not wear them high, opt for chunky heels or wedge style, which are easier to wear. Because there is not much variance in a mans shoe, a hint of sole around the upper part of the shoe will make the feet appear shorter.
Pointy shoes will definitely make the foot look longer but also thinner.

Avoid strappy sandals that expose too much of the foot. Peep-toe or sling back styles work best,

Darker colors will work well but don’t just stick to black, brown, or navy. Try grays, earth tones, and deeper shades of reds, blues, purples, or greens. Avoid pastels.

Bows, buckles, lace treatment, or a fringed tongue will make the feet seem smaller. Men should consider tassels or straps that cross the shoe closer to the toes.

Whether you have small or large feet, accept who you are and what makes you unique and beautiful.                                      Always Walk with Pride.

Organize and Store Your Boots Properly

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

Keep your boots in an obvious place  you can easily reach. This will keep them organized and help you to avoid buying duplicate styles. Lining them up by height and color will make coordinating your clothing easier.
If you are storing them in a box, be sure it is see through or use the top shelf of your closet  for the fall and winter or under your bed. Clear storage boxes are available at www.organize.com or at www.containerstore.com.
Keep your boots upright with a boot tree or coned shaped card board, to preserve their shape and keep them new looking. Always clean them after each wearing and treat  leather boots to keep them from drying out and looking dull. Please sure to replace the lifts on the heals when needed so they last longer and continue to look new.

Wear Stylish Boots in a Practical Way

Monday, November 9th, 2009

Wearing stylish boots will not only keep you warm but look very chic. Black knee high boots with any size heel can be worn to the office and look dressy enough for a dinner date in the evening. They can make a fuller calf look slimmer and cover any flaws. They look sexy yet sophisticated with a shorter or knee length skirt and create a romantic and feminine feel with a longer skirt.
A knee high flat boot will work well with casual clothing or preppy patterned skirts. If you tuck your jeans into your boots, be sure they are skinny jeans so you don’t create a ballooning effect.
For a thinner calf and ankle, look for a boot with bulk like a slouch or western boot. A slender heel is more flattering than a heavier heel which will tend to make you legs look even thinner.

Women with a larger calf and ankle should opt for a stretch boot. Scrunching down the shaft, then pulling it up like a stocking, will make it easier to get them on. Chunkier heels will make the a fuller calf appear slimmer. Look for styles with texture in basic colors and in fashion colors to make a statement. Pointy ankle boots look dressy with a pant and should be worn with thicker hose or tights with a skirt. A boot with rounded or square toe is more casual. Be sure the pant is long enough to cover the ankle and wear a dark sock or one with a pattern.

Are You Wearing Comfortable Shoes?

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

Synthetics which don’t breathe, cause your feet to blister.
Wear leather, suede, or fabrics uppers.
The toe area should be wide enough through the ball of the foot.
Press a finger into the ball area. The cushioning should have a little give or a heel that is slightly padded.
A pointy shoe with a false front will keep your toes from getting squished.
A wedge style offers more support and will distribute your weight better but could roll your ankle since there is little flexibility.
The heel of a pump should sit directly under the heel for better balance.
The sole should be flexible and bend at the front of the arch with a stiff bottom.
