Why is a Bargain a Bargain
Friday, July 23rd, 2010
Dear Tonia, Everything seems to be on sale today. I am confused and not sure what items are genuinely worth. So why does a bargain become a bargain and what guide lines should I follow?
Barbara, a Bargain Shopper from Boston.
Low prices are typically the result of an end-of-season sale, that the demand was less than expected, that the style is going out of fashion, or is damaged or ill fitting. Take advantage of sales being offered because items arrived in the store too early, the weather was not conducive to business, or are being promoted to encourage early buying for the upcoming season.
Never buy something just because you can’t resist the low price. Be sure you like it and more importantly, that it flatters your figure. There are lots of ugly styles out there revealing the mistakes of designers. Manufacturers dump those styles and ill fitting merchandise into discount and outlet stores, so be careful. Don’t be fooled by fancy labels. Trendy pieces on sale are usually an indication that the style is about to fade. Stick to classic pieces of good quality. Buy less but better quality.
Retailers today are using the mark it up to mark it down game. Have a general idea of what the item is really worth by comparing items in stores or on line.
Check the return policy. Too often, I weed out my clients closets and find numerous items with tags still hanging, that are no longer returnable. Try things on at the store or return what is not working right away. Why have hundreds of dollars in sale merchandise that doesn’t suit you. Less is more. Your guidelines are good judgment and taste. Happy hunting.

Don’t Get Stuck in a Fashion Rut
Wednesday, May 5th, 2010
As we age, we get too comfortable wearing our old standbys. All it takes it a little tweaking with basic styles you already own to look and feel fantastic. No need to make any radical changes. Remember what makes you look beautiful is being comfortable in your own skin and owning your own individual style.
Shop at a different store than you typically frequent. Try on styles from new vendors you haven’t used before. Ask a sales person who is dressed well whats hot.
Check out the fashion magazines to see what’s new and add the color of the season. This season corals of different shades are in style. They can easily be paired with brown or khaki and white looks fabulous.
Accessorize with a punchy necklace or earrings. Don’t forget to add a belt to define your waist.
Purchase a new handbag in a fun color and texture and get some new sexy sandals.
Speak to your stylist and try a new do. You’ll look and feel 10 years younger.

Prom Dress Shopping Doesn’t Have to Be Stressful
Wednesday, February 17th, 2010
To give you an idea of what the trend is today, follow the stars. Typically the manufacturers are showing what the celebrities are strutting on the red carpet or the award ceremonies, following the stylish stars as well as the couture industry.
The most important factor is to keep your figure and personal style in mind. Although certain styles will work for everyone, your body plays a crucial role in choosing the perfect dress that flatters your figure. Accent your favorite body part and flaunt your looks. Remember you can look fabulous without revealing so much. Too much of anything is no good and you want to look classy not trashy. Less is always more.
Style. A fitted dress will show off an hour glass figure. A cocktail dress, a few inches above or below the knee, will feature your great legs. A ball gown skirt will camouflage your back side, large or small. Always create balance so your top and bottom appear to be in proportion.
If you tend to be on the sophisticated side, look for a simple black column dress or an elegant cocktail length with simple accessories to highlight your face. If preppy is more you, look for a bold black and white using a pop of color in your shoes and handbag. If you like looking different or showy, don’t go over board. You may want to stand out but be sure it’s in a good way. If you are going for short or a high split stay away from cleavage. Think modest, it’s a school prom not a Vegas show.
Accessories. A very intricate style calls for minimal accessories. Keep your shoes and handbag simple. To make a bold statement play up the eyes or lips to add drama and couple it with sheer make up. Be sure you are able to walk in the shoes you select. If you are not used to wearing heels choose a lower heel or practice walking in a higher heel. You want to be able to walk with poise and confidence. That’s the secret to looking beautiful.
Color is another important factor. Pale colors will wash out ivory skin but the deeper shades of pink, peach, or lilac are great for light completions. Usually black works for any skin tone. Jewel tones work best for darker skin tones. If you want to be daring with color, keep the style simple.
Determine your budget. More expensive is not necessarily the answer to looking great. You don’t have to break the bank for a fabulous style nor do you have to sacrifice style for price. Give yourself time to shop around and use some creativity. Shopping on line will give you an idea of what’s out there before you hit the stores. Be sure to wear a good bra, shape wear, if necessary, and a pair of heels when going shopping. If the dress is going to require a lot of alterations it’s probably not cut for you. You don’t want to pay more for alterations than the cost of the dress. You’re likely to never wear it again. Save the alteration money for when you want to cut it down.
Once you decide on a color, inform your date so you don’t clash in color and style. For example, you don’t want him in a contemporary look while you are wearing a Victorian style. You want to compliment each other so guide him a bit especially if fashion is not one of his strengths. Be sure to compliment him.
Enjoy yourself. Don’t stress out too much. When shopping, just bring one person you trust with a sense of style. Too many opinions will confuse you and it is rare that someone wants you to look better than they do.
Decide which styles will flatter your figure, decide on your budget, give yourself enough time to shop, and more importantly have fun. You want it to be a memorable event and a great way to bond with your mom, sisters or a good friend.

What to Look For When Buying Jeans
Tuesday, July 14th, 2009
While jeans seem to be the dress of choice today, finding the correct pair can be a nightmare. We are all in search of finding the “perfect” sexy pair that fits correctly flattering the figure yet maintaining a certain level of comfort. The right pair of jeans will lengthen your legs, flatten your tummy, lift your butt, and create curves in all the right places.Don’t buy them too big or they won’t tuck you in and will look frumpy.
Darker wash denim are dressier and more slenderizing. Buy two pair and hem one for flats and one for heels.Own two pair that fit well rather than five ill fitting pair.
For finer settings, wear with a dressy top and high heel boots or shoes.
Premium stitched denim hugs curves and maintains its shape after washing.
The width at the ankle should not be smaller than the width at the knee.
Offset seams will flatter fuller hips and thighs. Calm down back end detail.
A well-cut blazer paired with a casual off-white top gives a professional edge.
Power Leg or Trouser leg jeans are dressier and are very chic.
Zipper free styles in a boot leg, will make the tummy look flatter.
On a narrower figure, a pair that hits below the navel will accent the waist.
****Hot Tip****
I found a great sexy jean called NYDJ (Not Your Daughter’s Jeans). These comfortable
jeans are for almost every figure and have a “tummy tuck” feature. They range from $98 to $128 and a believe me, there’re worth every penny. Try them and see what happens. Available at Lord & Taylor, Nordstrom, and on line. Choose black and dark denim. The second runner up is the Style & Co Jean for about $42 and is available at Macy’s.

Buying Clothes Can Be Easier and More Fun if You Keep These Tips in Mind
Friday, May 22nd, 2009
Before you go shopping, make a list of the things you NEED, like the little black dress, the things you WANT, like another pair of shoes, and the things you definitely DON’T NEED, like another one of the things you already have ten of in your closet, like comfort clothes. Set a budget so you can feather through racks quickly and be more selective.
Set a time limit for shopping in each store. Start with the NEED list. Spend about half of your time looking for items on your list that fit properly. Spend about half of the remaining time on your WANT list, ruling out any regular priced goods, remember, you don’t really need it. If there is any time remaining, have fun trying on things you know you won’t buy but would like to try on. Dress for shopping by wearing the correct bra and shape wear and don’t forget your heels if you’re going for special occasion. Use a three way mirror for rear and side shots and don’t put yourself down. Enjoy yourself.

How to Always Have Something to Wear
Monday, February 2nd, 2009
Don’t impulse buy. Buy only what you need and what fits properly. Eliminate everything in your closet that doesn’t fit or you haven’t worn in a year or more. Get rid of any original faux pas in your closet, no matter how much you paid for it. Identify pieces that reflect your personality and the message you want to send in your dressing style.
Keep or buy only three colors you like, look well on you, or will coordinate with what’s in your closet. Establish a workable budget and stick to it. Make a list of only what you need to round off your wardrobe. Avoid buying trendy items. Buy fashionable timeless pieces in a better quality. Buy things that already go with something you have. Add one or two well thought out items per month and include a simple black dress. Add color or a trendy look by using accessories, fun shoes and textured hand bags. Set aside time each week to shop, on line or off, to buy what’s on your list.

How to Shop For A Bargain
Monday, March 10th, 2008
Take advantage of buying on sale, but don’t buy because of price alone. Buy only what you like and only what fits you properly. Look for items you can wear year round. Avoid buying trendy items at any price (even designers make mistakes) and invest in timeless classic styles. Look for quality in jeans, black pants, skirts, and basic layering tops with different necklines. You don’t want to look the same everyday in a different color so avoid buying more than two of the same style. Choose a basic color (black, white, beige) and a fashion color (any other color). Be sure to check the return policy. Use good judgment. If in doubt, leave it out.
